July 28, 2009 – practice for presentation

July 28, 2009 at 8:40 pm (Uncategorized)

Well, the day has been long. The time has been worth it.

We practiced for a long time on our presentation for tomorrow. Tomorrow’s presentation is a dry-run for a few people. The dry run is basically a practice before we do the real deal in from of entire company. The Case Competition has been fun, a lot of work, and worth it. I enjoyed the rehearsal time today with one of my Mentors, Troy. The one-on-one time was only because one of the other team members went back to work and the other member left the room because we sort of had a misunderstanding.

The misunderstanding is hard to explain. Basically one person said something to me. I said something back. The other person took it wrong. I said something back and the other person walked away. Well, that is how misunderstandings go.

But, we are able to keep working together. That is one of the benefits of the experience. You think you have patience for people and then it is put to the test. Then you have to decide if you are going to keep that patience going. There is something so important about stepping back and just letting the good happen. Don’t let impatience get in the way of building bridges. Don’t let impatience or judgements get in the way of you being taught by other people. When be teachable is more important, take it.

Anyway that is some of the deep thoughts from me today.

July 13

Listening to the Stone Roses, I wanna be Adored.

Thinking about how great the past weekend was.

What a great load of opportunities in front of me.

Some say good things about me at work, that is a good thing. For once, the good things. For once, I’m not fighting my personality. For once, I am pushing forward.

July 8

July 8, 2009 at 2:54 pm (Work, jobs, journal, technical writing, web)

I did not get to do good writing this morning.

Had a good learning opportunity at work. I listened in to the Webex that was going on about the product I am writing about. Really cool opportunity to listen to people in Uruguay that will help customers, the host in Europe, and a few of us in Texas on the same call. We could see the host work on her screen. I quickly grabbed a few screen shots that I did not have.

Had one interview with exec about our project. We have a lot more work to do now. Can’t spill the beans about what we are doing. It is one of a kind.

Have one more interview today with a tech guy in our company.

Then off to Writers group if I am not too worn out.

Finished working the main part of Rainey’s site last night. Sent link to her and have not heard back yet. Hope they approve and then I can move forward. Need to work on my site, it looks like crap. How many times am I going to say that.

What a weekend

July 6, 2009 at 12:02 pm (Uncategorized)

All I know is that the weekend was busy. I am happy to be back at work to take a break from all the fun. Whoo.

Well, actually I would love to do it all again.

I think the best part was watching the kids have fun. They enjoyed Thursday night dinner with Denise’s parents. Denise had a steak on her birthday. Yeah. Still working on getting her dad to take the steaks off the grill before they are dried out and chewy.

Friday the kids enjoyed Mimi and Granddady’s place; the kiddy pool, the baby, and food. I loved watching Devri eat her steak. I had a helping annoying hand in getting my dad to cook the steaks for only so long so it would be medium rare for Denise. She would have eaten it either way but, I like to try and get it right for her, which we did.

Saturday I had to work at Starbuck the first part of the day. Then we all went to meet up with Mimi and Grandaddy again in Forth Worth. We sat outside to eat hot dogs, which pleased David, and waited for the fireworks. We waited until 10:00 and left. I wonder if anyone got to see them. I had to be at work early the next morning.

Sunday was work and take the family to eat at Olive Garden. Why bother cooking at that point. The night was capped off with a very poplular movie that I am not fond of: Twilight. I know Talledaga Nights did not meet the Standards it should have either. It’s hard to pick a good movie.

hey, here’s a new post

June 10, 2009 at 9:07 pm (Starbucks, Work, jobs, technical writing, web)

Well, I started the new job at Sabre.

Whoa, happened to the past month or so. Where have I bee? I don’t know. Right here not blogging like I need to. That is so not the right thing to do. Can you tell I have been hanging around younger people lately?

In April I started working at Starbucks. That has been going well. I have been learning many new things about coffee that I never did before. And all the free coffee is a great thing. The longer nights working took some getting used to. I enjoy the variety of people coming into the store and to work with. Surprising too, how there can be so much drama in a Starbucks.

May was my birthday month. That only sucks because I am a year older. The lesson to learn is that we may get older, but there is wisdom gained.

So, I started the new job at Sabre Holdings last week. I am working as a technical writer in the intern program. The program is a good way to learn something about the company. I would like to stay on well after the intern program is done.

We stayed late working on the Case Competition. Our group is very active in conversation right now. We are still hashing out the big picture of the project. I feel this is a successful group. Both of the mentors leading us, Troy and Abed, are fantastic. they have enormous experience. I look forward to the experience.

The first week of work

April 14, 2009 at 1:59 pm (Starbucks, Work)

Well, The first week of training at Starbucks is over. I would like to think that this is a new road ahead in the right direction. The people to work with are nice. The intimidating thing is the espresso bar. The drinks could come in so many variations that it is mind boggling. I have to get all of that down still. I have to figure out what it takes to get what drink. Today I went in at 5:00 to open the store. Opening is fun. So many people are regulars and the other baristas know the drinks before the customers will order it. I ran the register the whole time today. Training in this way is effective because I still get to learn about the drinks, just in a different way. I learned that you don’t have to know exactly what people order all the way at the register to ring it up. If someone wants a skinny vanilla latte, you don’t have to worry about ringing up the non-fat milk. But, you do have to make sure the barista knows it.

Well, I think I will work a little bit on some homework. We are in the midst of the semester group project, as well as the individual project. I have to look at my part of the project again, more editing, more corrections. This is fun.

I think I will give Dad a call and find out about how he is doing.

Denise just got from the doctor with David. He had an x-ray on his stomach. We have been wondering what is wrong with the boy for a few weeks. He has not been acting like he usually does, in the good way. He dumped a full bottle of water in the car before Denise got to the doctor earlier today. He gets strange when he is sick.

Work-first day

April 6, 2009 at 7:04 am (Work, job search, jobs)

Well, the thing I am going to do happened rather quickly. I went in for a second interview at Starbucks last wednesday. I thought I was not going to be offered a job because of the way the conversation went. He was concerned with how I would react to making a lower salary than I am used to, as well as, being overqualified for the position. To my surprise, the manager offered me a job starting today.

The only concern I guess I had was would I be able to still collect unemployment if I am working part time. The answer is yes. And I don’t mean to sound like some beggar that needs to suck off the state, but I have a family to take care. I mean, hey, what happens if the only thing you are offered after being without work for over two months is a part time job. You have to think about these things. Plus it is a good idea to take the job.

So, I plan on working hard, doing my best. What else is there. I am a bit excited, the perks are good. Too bad I have been laying off the coffee. I have cut myself back to one a day.

Anyway, better go to work.
